Do you qualify for GS-6?
With experience: The basic requirements do not require experience. To qualify at GS-6, you need one year of experience equivalent to GS-5 that includes tasks like scheduling patients, reviewing health records, and verifying insurance. GS-5 is a federal pay grade level, and your resume must show this work clearly.
With education: A high school diploma, GED, or a proficiency certificate from a state or territorial Board or Department of Education meets the education requirement. Post-high school education can substitute for high school if you submit a transcript, and it must come from an accredited school recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
How to apply well
What to send:
- Long-form resume or CV listing job titles, employers, pay plan and grade, month and year dates, and hours per week
- SF-50 showing grade and time in grade, if you are a current or former federal employee
- Transcript, if you use education to qualify or to replace high school education
- DD-214 or statement of service, if you claim veterans' preference
- SF-15 with proof, if you claim 10-point veterans' preference
- Cover letter, optional
How you will be rated: You will be rated on how well your application, resume, questionnaire answers, and USA Hire assessment match the qualifications. The assessment measures competencies such as customer service, teamwork, reading comprehension, and reasoning. Missing or unclear information may lead to an ineligible rating, and the agency will not assume experience based on job titles.
Tips for this job:
- Show one year of GS-5 level work on your resume, with dates, hours per week, and specific duties under each job.
- Set aside at least 3 hours for the USA Hire assessment, and finish it within any deadline in your notice.
- If you are a current or former federal employee, include an SF-50 that shows your time in grade.
