Who can apply: Internal to an agency, Federal employees - Excepted service, The public, Federal employees - Competitive service.

The announcement is open to the public, U.S. citizens, nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S., and to current federal employees. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply, although non-citizens may be appointed when citizens cannot be recruited under VA policy.

Experience: The basic requirements do not require experience. To qualify at GS-6, you need one year of experience equivalent to GS-5 that includes tasks like scheduling patients, reviewing health records, and verifying insurance. GS-5 is a federal pay grade level, and your resume must show this work clearly.

Education: A high school diploma, GED, or a proficiency certificate from a state or territorial Board or Department of Education meets the education requirement. Post-high school education can substitute for high school if you submit a transcript, and it must come from an accredited school recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 330 days (September 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

The announcement may close without advance notice, before its listed closing date.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well your application, resume, questionnaire answers, and USA Hire assessment match the qualifications. The assessment measures competencies such as customer service, teamwork, reading comprehension, and reasoning. Missing or unclear information may lead to an ineligible rating, and the agency will not assume experience based on job titles.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Show one year of GS-5 level work on your resume, with dates, hours per week, and specific duties under each job.
  • Set aside at least 3 hours for the USA Hire assessment, and finish it within any deadline in your notice.
  • If you are a current or former federal employee, include an SF-50 that shows your time in grade.
