Do you qualify for VN?
With experience: Your experience must match the grade you apply for. For the top level (Nurse III), you need a master's degree in nursing (MSN) plus 2 years of specialized nursing experience, one year of which must match Nurse II and meet all five dimensions of nursing practice.
With education: You must be a graduate of a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE, or meet the foreign school rules listed in the announcement. Higher grades require an MSN or a doctoral degree, and foreign degrees do not count as related degrees.
Licenses and certifications you need:
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted nursing registration (license) in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia
How to apply well
What to send:
- Long-form resume or CV showing job title, duties, start and end dates (month/year), and average hours per week
- Resume must also list each school, degree conferred date, and license state and expiration date
- Transcripts if you rely on education to qualify
- SF-50 if you are a current or former federal employee
- DD-214 if you claim veterans' preference
- SF-15 if you claim 10-point veterans' preference
- Professional certification (CPHQ or CPPS), if you have one
How you will be rated: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, and your nursing experience is checked against five dimensions: practice, veteran/patient driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice/research. Missing, unclear, or unverified information can lower your rating or make you ineligible, and referrals go first to current permanent VHA employees, then VA Nationwide employees, then all others.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must include the required dates, hours per week, degree conferred date, and license state and expiration date, or your rating may suffer.
- Claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire and send your DD-214 or SF-15 with it, since documentation is required to award preference.
- Apply before the closing date, because the job may close early once 75 applications are received.
