Who can apply: Internal to an agency, The public.

The announcement lists the job as open to the public and to U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S. The agency's clarification says it is open only to current permanent VA Nationwide employees and U.S. citizens.

Experience: Your experience must match the grade you apply for. For the top level (Nurse III), you need a master's degree in nursing (MSN) plus 2 years of specialized nursing experience, one year of which must match Nurse II and meet all five dimensions of nursing practice.

Education: You must be a graduate of a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE, or meet the foreign school rules listed in the announcement. Higher grades require an MSN or a doctoral degree, and foreign degrees do not count as related degrees.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted nursing registration (license) in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or the District of Columbia

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 7 days (November 10, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This job will close when 75 applications are received, which may happen before the stated closing date.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, and your nursing experience is checked against five dimensions: practice, veteran/patient driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice/research. Missing, unclear, or unverified information can lower your rating or make you ineligible, and referrals go first to current permanent VHA employees, then VA Nationwide employees, then all others.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must include the required dates, hours per week, degree conferred date, and license state and expiration date, or your rating may suffer.
  • Claim veterans' preference in the questionnaire and send your DD-214 or SF-15 with it, since documentation is required to award preference.
  • Apply before the closing date, because the job may close early once 75 applications are received.
