Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, and hiring preferences apply to groups such as military spouses, veterans and people in transition from military service.

Experience: The target level needs 12 months of childcare or youth program experience and knowledge of child and youth development theories. The intermediate level needs 6 months of experience in a group program for children or youth, equal to the CY-01 Entry Level; the entry level needs no experience.

Education: Education can replace some experience. Target level: 12 semester hours of coursework on the age group served, a Child Development Associate (CDA) or similar nationally recognized credential, or completed competency-based training. Intermediate level: 6 semester hours in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education, or completed childcare training that the Air Force treats as equivalent. Schools must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized body, and foreign education needs proof of U.S. equivalence.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 57 days (December 31, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents and questionnaire answers are first checked for minimum qualifications, then compared to rate your experience. Inflated or inconsistent answers can cost you consideration, and missing information can lower your rating or make your application incomplete.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Upload proof for any preference you claim, such as a DD-214 for veterans, or it may not count.
  • Your resume must clearly show your childcare or youth program experience with dates and hours per week.
  • If you use education to qualify, upload transcripts from accredited schools and include proof of equivalence for any foreign degree.
