Who can apply: The public, Native Americans.
The job is open to the public, but applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Native Americans with a tribal affiliation are also listed as eligible, and the law requires IHS to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Interior Department's definition of Indian.
Experience: You need at least 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level in federal, private, or public sector work. That experience should include nursing leadership and oversight of daily clinical operations, supervising nursing staff and workloads, monitoring nursing and patient safety standards, and supporting quality improvement. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts.
Education: A bachelor's, associate, or graduate degree, or a diploma, from an accredited professional nursing program is required. The program must be accredited by a body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education when you got the degree. If you graduated from a foreign nursing school, you need certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.
Licenses and certifications:
- Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
- Current, active, full, unrestricted professional nurse license or registration from a state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 15 days (November 18, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: HR first checks that you meet the minimum education, licensure, and experience requirements. Then subject matter experts give a pass or fail review of the first two pages of your resume for administration and management, decision making, and leadership, and you must complete the online vacancy questionnaire. Exaggerating experience or making false statements may disqualify you, and missing required documents means you lose consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Show your nursing leadership and supervision experience in the first two pages of your resume, with dates and hours per week for each job.
- You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date.
- If you claim Indian preference, the BIA-4432 form must be signed, dated, and verified by a tribal or BIA official, or it will not count.
Kandidatu is an independent website: only the official posting counts. Read it before you apply.
