Do you qualify for GS-12?
With experience: You need at least 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level in federal, private, or public sector work. That experience should include nursing leadership and oversight of daily clinical operations, supervising nursing staff and workloads, monitoring nursing and patient safety standards, and supporting quality improvement. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts.
With education: A bachelor's, associate, or graduate degree, or a diploma, from an accredited professional nursing program is required. The program must be accredited by a body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education when you got the degree. If you graduated from a foreign nursing school, you need certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.
Licenses and certifications you need:
- Passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)
- Current, active, full, unrestricted professional nurse license or registration from a state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
How to apply well
What to send:
- Resume; only the first two pages are reviewed
- Form BIA-4432 signed and dated, if claiming Indian preference, with tribal verification
- CTAP or ICTAP documentation, if claiming those priorities
- Transcripts (official or unofficial) listing course titles, credit hours, and grades, encouraged
- License and certifications listed on your resume with expiration dates
- Optional short essays (200 words or less each) answering four questions, with a statement that you wrote them yourself without AI or consultants
How you will be rated: HR first checks that you meet the minimum education, licensure, and experience requirements. Then subject matter experts give a pass or fail review of the first two pages of your resume for administration and management, decision making, and leadership, and you must complete the online vacancy questionnaire. Exaggerating experience or making false statements may disqualify you, and missing required documents means you lose consideration.
Tips for this job:
- Show your nursing leadership and supervision experience in the first two pages of your resume, with dates and hours per week for each job.
- You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date.
- If you claim Indian preference, the BIA-4432 form must be signed, dated, and verified by a tribal or BIA official, or it will not count.
