Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public. The announcement says you must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or owe allegiance to the U.S. to apply, though it also says non-citizens may be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited.

Experience: You need one year of experience equivalent to GS-7 leading or supervising MSAs or similar administrative patient support staff in a non-VA medical inpatient, outpatient, or interdisciplinary setting, which is the GS-8 requirement. You must also show specific knowledge, skills and abilities in your application, such as managing patient support staff, fiscal planning, and staff training.

Education: A high school diploma, GED, or proficiency certificate from a state or territorial board or department of education meets the basic education requirement. Education from accredited schools is accepted only if it is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on your application materials, your answers to the application questionnaire, and your USA Hire assessment results. VA also runs reference checks, and missing or incomplete information may lead to an ineligible rating or a lower score.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • The 2-page resume limit does not apply here, so describe your supervisory work clearly with dates, hours and specifics.
  • If you use education to qualify, attach an official transcript from an accredited school.
  • Set aside at least 3 hours to complete the USA Hire assessments, and finish them by the deadline.
