Who can apply: The public, Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL).

This job is open to U.S. citizens or nationals and to career transition eligibles (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL), which means certain current or former federal employees whose job or agency was eliminated. It is filled under Direct Hire Authority, so veterans' preference does not apply.

Experience: You need one year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level, from federal or private work. The experience must include civil engineering work on water infrastructure such as dams, canals, or pumping plants, planning and managing engineering projects, and applying engineering standards for safety and compliance.

Education: You need a basic education requirement in addition to experience. This can be a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or a degree in a related science such as physics, hydrology, or geology plus at least 1 year of professional engineering experience. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam or completing 60 semester hours of science and engineering courses can also meet it. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Valid driver's license, kept throughout employment

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 17 days (November 20, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, application questionnaire, and any required assessments are used to rate how well you meet the qualifications. You must also complete USA Hire assessments in accountability, customer service, decisiveness, flexibility, interpersonal skills, problem solving, and resilience, and meet a cut score. Overstating your experience or cheating on an assessment can get you removed.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must state full-time or the hours per week for each job, or that time may not count toward experience.
  • Show the grade level for each federal job and how long you held each grade, since this is needed to judge the GS-11 experience requirement.
  • Send transcripts from accredited schools with all required details if you use education to qualify, because typed course lists are not accepted.
