Do you qualify for GS-12?

With experience: You need one year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level, from federal or private work. The experience must include civil engineering work on water infrastructure such as dams, canals, or pumping plants, planning and managing engineering projects, and applying engineering standards for safety and compliance.

With education: You need a basic education requirement in addition to experience. This can be a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or a degree in a related science such as physics, hydrology, or geology plus at least 1 year of professional engineering experience. Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam or completing 60 semester hours of science and engineering courses can also meet it. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • Valid driver's license, kept throughout employment

How to apply well

What to send:

  • Resume, no more than 2 single-sided pages, with month-year dates and hours per week or full-time for each job
  • Resume showing the grade level held in each federal job and how long you held each grade
  • All college transcripts, undergraduate and graduate, with school, grades, credit hours, major, GPA or class rank, and degree date; typed course lists are not accepted
  • Completed USA Hire assessments
  • For career transition: agency notice, SF-50s showing status, and most recent performance appraisal
  • No photos and no Adobe portfolio files

How you will be rated: Your resume, application questionnaire, and any required assessments are used to rate how well you meet the qualifications. You must also complete USA Hire assessments in accountability, customer service, decisiveness, flexibility, interpersonal skills, problem solving, and resilience, and meet a cut score. Overstating your experience or cheating on an assessment can get you removed.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must state full-time or the hours per week for each job, or that time may not count toward experience.
  • Show the grade level for each federal job and how long you held each grade, since this is needed to judge the GS-11 experience requirement.
  • Send transcripts from accredited schools with all required details if you use education to qualify, because typed course lists are not accepted.
