Do you qualify for GS-9 to GS-11?
With experience: For GS-11, you need at least 1 year of social work experience after your master's degree, at the GS-9 level, in health care or a related setting, plus an independent state license. For GS-9, no experience is needed beyond the basic requirements.
With education: You must have a master's degree in social work from a school fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). A doctoral degree in social work cannot replace the master's degree, but for GS-11 it can replace the 1 year of experience.
Licenses and certifications you need:
- State license or certification to practice social work independently at the master's level
- For GS-9 only, VHA may waive the license requirement for qualified applicants, but the license must be obtained within set deadlines
How to apply well
What to send:
- License showing independent social work practice
- Long-form resume or curriculum vitae (CV)
- Official transcript showing your social work master's degree
- Certificate of Foreign Equivalency if using foreign education
How you will be rated: You will be rated on how well you meet the listed qualifications. VA will verify your experience and will not make assumptions, so be clear and specific. Errors or missing documents may lower your rating or make you ineligible.
Tips for this job:
- Attach an official transcript showing your master's in social work from a CSWE-accredited school, since it is required.
- Upload your state license with your application, and check that it is the independent master's level.
