What you would do
- Operate an electronic checkout system and make change
- Manage change machines so enough cash and coins are available
- Help customers with prices, identification, and item locations
- Count cash and negotiable instruments for an accountability report
- Help customers with self-checkout registers
- Change register tape and clear scanning jams on registers
Do you qualify for GS-3?
With experience: You need six months of progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that shows you can learn the job (general experience). Paid and unpaid work, including volunteer work, counts.
With education: One full year of education above high school can qualify you instead of experience. You can also combine the two: divide your months of experience by 6, divide your semester hours by 30, and add the two percentages to reach 100%. Transcripts are required if you use education.
