Who can apply: Internal to an agency, The public.

The job is open to the public, but the agency clarified it is open to current permanent VA employees, past, current and upcoming VA Health Professions Training (HPT) participants, and all U.S. citizens. You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or person who owes allegiance to the U.S.

Experience: Your RN experience is rated at grade levels from Nurse I to Nurse III, based on scope and five nursing dimensions. For example, Nurse I, Level III requires 2 years of professional nursing experience, with one year equal to Nurse I, Level 2. Higher grades need more specialized nursing experience.

Education: You must have graduated from a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE when you finished. An associate degree (ADN), BSN, MSN, or doctorate can count, depending on the grade level. A master's in a related field needs a BSN, and foreign degrees are not creditable as related degrees.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted RN registration in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.
  • Graduate Nurse Technician exception allows temporary appointment while pursuing licensure

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This job will close once 50 applications are received, which may be sooner than the closing date.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications using the online questionnaire, which covers five nursing dimensions: Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research. Your application and documents will be verified, and missing or unclear information may lower your rating or make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Use a long-form resume or CV with dates and hours for each job; the two-page resume limit does not apply here.
  • If you are a veteran, claim preference in the questionnaire and attach your DD-214 with dates and character of service.
  • If you use education to qualify, send transcripts from U.S. Department of Education-recognized accredited schools.
