With experience: Your experience sets your grade level. For example, Nurse I, Level III requires an associate degree or diploma in nursing plus 2 years of professional nursing experience, one year of which is equivalent to Nurse I, Level 2. Experience is judged on five areas: practice, veteran and patient driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice and research.

With education: Your education also sets your grade level. An associate degree or diploma in nursing, a bachelor's (BSN), a master's (MSN), or a doctoral degree can each qualify you at different levels. Nursing programs must be accredited by ACEN or CCNE and recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign degrees need a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency.
