Higher grades (GS-09 and GS-11) have their own experience or education rules listed in the announcement.

With education: You need a bachelor's degree or higher in range management or a closely related field, with at least 42 semester hours: 18 in range management, 15 in plant, animal, and soil sciences (at least one course in each), and 9 in related resource subjects such as wildlife, watershed, forestry, or outdoor recreation management. How to apply well

What to send:

  • Resume, no more than two single-sided pages, with dates in month-year format and hours worked per week or full-time
  • Resume showing how long you held each grade level, with series and grade for federal jobs
  • Complete all required assessments, including the Structured Resume Review
  • Undergraduate and graduate transcripts if you qualify through education, with name, school, grades, credit hours, major, GPA or class rank, and degree date
  • Unofficial transcripts are accepted now, but official ones are needed before starting work
  • DD-214 or other proof of service if you claim veterans' preference
  • CTAP or ICTAP proof if claimed: separation notice, SF-50s, and most recent performance appraisal

How you will be rated: Your resume, questionnaire answers, and assessments are rated into three groups: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, and Qualified, with veterans' preference placed above non-preference applicants within each group. You will be assessed on compliance inspection, interpersonal skills, planning and evaluating, rangeland management, and technology application. Overstating experience or cheating on an assessment can get you removed.

Tips for this job:

  • Write hours per week for each job on your resume, or say full-time, or that time may not count toward your experience.
  • Clearly show which jobs match GS-05 duties and the dates for each grade level you claim.
  • If you use education, submit full transcripts with credit hours, GPA, and degree dates, because a typed course list is not accepted.
