Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or owe allegiance to the U.S. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: For GS-5, you need one year of specialized experience (paid or unpaid) that includes operating computer systems, talking with callers to find out what their calls are about, and using communication equipment to respond. For GS-6 and GS-7, you need one year of similar experience at each level, with GS-7 requiring answering emergency calls, dispatching emergency personnel, and running dispatch software.

Education: Four years of education above high school from an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university, with transcripts attached. You can also combine education and experience so the total reaches 100 percent.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Valid state driver's license
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
  • Emergency Medical Dispatch certification
  • Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent
  • State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 26 days (November 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Human Resources reviews your resume and supporting documents against the listed qualifications and rates you based on them. If your qualifications or experience appear inflated, you may lose consideration, and incomplete packages are not considered.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must be two pages or less and show hours per week for each job, or it may be marked incomplete.
  • If you qualify through education, attach transcripts, and attach a copy of each required license or certification, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Use plain language and avoid acronyms in your resume, because the agency will not guess what your experience means.
