Who can apply: The public.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the United States. They must also be currently employed as a federal, state, or municipal law enforcement officer, and be at least almost 21 but under 39 on the application date (older applicants may qualify under a special federal retirement rule).
Experience: You need at least one year of full duty service as a law enforcement officer after completing training. The announcement does not give a grade level for this experience.
Education: A high school diploma is the minimum education. You must have completed, or be willing to complete, the Uniformed Police Training Program (UPTP) at FLETC, and other federal academy programs are considered case by case.
Licenses and certifications:
- Valid driver's license held for at least one year at the time of application
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 27 days (November 30, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your application and your answers to the occupational questionnaire are reviewed first. Later steps include an oral board interview, a background investigation interview, a medical exam, a physical test, a psychological exam, and a full background check, and passing them does not guarantee a job offer.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Include your FLETC certificate or transcript with your application, because it is required and missing documents lead to denial
- Print, sign, and upload the OF-306 along with proof of current police employment
- Keep your resume to two pages or less and make sure it shows your dates and experience
