1 Check you can apply You are here

Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the United States can apply. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You need at least 1 year of supervised clinical work after medical school, such as a one-year internship or the first year of a residency. You also need a completed accredited residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology lasting at least 4 years. Work experience cannot replace this required residency training.

Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree, or an equivalent degree, from a school accredited in the United States or Canada. Foreign medical degrees count only if they meet U.S. standards, which can be shown by ECFMG certification, a fifth pathway certificate, or passing the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full, and unrestricted physician license from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, may be required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, may be required
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, may be required

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 149 days (April 1, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your full application is rated on how well you meet the qualifications, using your resume, supporting documents, and online questionnaire answers. Missing information can make you ineligible, and claiming qualifications you do not have can remove you from consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to two pages or less and list hours worked per week for each job.
  • Upload a copy of your physician license or certification, or you will be rated ineligible.
  • If you qualify through education, include transcripts from accredited schools.
