Who can apply: The public.
Open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and those who owe allegiance to the U.S. Non-citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens. Veterans get preference when qualifications are about equal.
Experience: You need completed residency training in an accredited core specialty. This can be a three-year residency completed in good standing, or one year of approved training after medical school followed by two years of independent practice in the U.S., or non-U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the U.S.
Education: You need a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an approved school. Approved schools are accredited by the LCME or COCA, or for foreign graduates, meet ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year of graduation.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

4 After you apply

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
