Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or owe allegiance to the U.S. Current eligible VA and federal employees should apply under announcement OCA-MA-INT-MSA-0679-FY27-AH instead.

Experience: You need one year of experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level. Qualifying experience includes scheduling appointments, keeping medical and administrative records, verifying insurance, obtaining medical information from patients, and serving customers. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts. The full performance level for this job is GS-5.

Education: Two years of education above high school can qualify you instead of experience, and transcripts are required. The basic education requirement is a high school diploma, a GED, or a state-issued proficiency certificate. Education must come from schools recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 57 days (December 31, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This is an open continuous announcement. Applications received after the initial referral cut-off date of November 5, 2026 will be referred at regular intervals until the positions are filled.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications, your answers on the application questionnaire, and your USA Hire assessment results. The VA assesses customer service, flexibility, integrity, interpersonal skills, reading comprehension, reasoning, self-management, and teamwork, and it may check references. Missing required information may make you ineligible or lower your rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Include a transcript if you are using two years of college to qualify, because it is required.
  • Be clear and specific about your experience and dates, since the VA says it will not make assumptions.
  • Set aside at least 3 hours for the USA Hire assessments and complete them within the deadline in your notice.
