Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens can apply, and you must provide proof of citizenship. The job is open to the public.

Experience: One year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 doing complex ultrasound exams, helping with pre- and post-procedure exams (such as fine needle aspiration or biopsy), and maintaining ultrasound equipment and accessories. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, counts.

Education: One and a half years of graduate-level education directly related to the job, such as sonography or radiology. You can also combine education and experience to reach 100 percent: divide your experience months by 12, divide graduate semester hours beyond the first year (total minus 18) by 9, and add the two numbers. Schools must be accredited by an accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education must be evaluated by a qualified private organization or given full U.S. credit.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Obtain and maintain current American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification in the specialization
  • Obtain and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 12 days (November 13, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application package (resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers) will be reviewed after the announcement closes to see if you meet the qualification requirements. If you inflate your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration, and incomplete packages or errors may affect eligibility.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make sure your resume is two pages or less and lists hours per week for each job.
  • Describe your ultrasound exams, pre- and post-procedure help, and equipment maintenance in plain words.
  • If you use education to qualify, send transcripts from accredited schools and re-select any other documents in your application before the 11/13/2026 deadline.
