Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. Veterans and military spouses are considered along with all other candidates.

Experience: You need one year of specialized experience, which the announcement describes as typical of GS-12 work. It includes managing complex facility programs, designing mechanical systems such as HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and utilities for military or large institutions, giving expert technical oversight, and coordinating projects and contractor disputes.

Education: You need a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or another listed route such as a professional engineering license, passing the FE exam, or 60 semester hours of required science and engineering courses. A science degree such as physics or architecture can count if you also have at least 1 year of professional engineering experience. Education cannot replace experience for this job, so you must meet the experience requirement on its own.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Valid state driver's license, which you must have or get and keep to operate vehicles

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 3 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application package, including your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers, is reviewed against the qualification requirements. If the agency finds you have inflated your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration, and missing information can make your application incomplete or ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must be two pages or less and must show hours worked per week for each job, or it may be marked incomplete.
  • If you qualify through education, upload your transcripts with your application or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Describe your experience in plain language and avoid acronyms, since the agency will not assume what your resume means.
