Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. The agency clarifies that non-U.S. nationals may apply if they have lived in the U.S. or a U.S. territory for 3 or more continuous years before starting federal work. Only candidates who live within 35 miles of Fort Huachuca are considered, and military spouse and involuntarily separated military preference eligibles are included.

Experience: Option 1: at least 18 months working in group programs with children or youth, plus knowledge of child and youth development theories, plus a DoD standardized training course or a Child Development Associate (CDA) or Military School-Age (MSA) credential. Option 2: at least 12 months of similar group program experience, plus the education listed below. The announcement does not name a GS grade for the experience.

Education: All candidates need a high school diploma or GED. For the 12-month experience option, you need an associate's degree or 60 semester hours of college credit in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, special education, human development, youth program administration, recreation, physical education, or closely related behavioral sciences. A major of at least 24 semester hours in a related field also counts, as does a bachelor's or advanced degree in those fields. General psychology and sociology courses do not count. Schools must be regionally or nationally accredited.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 8 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application is reviewed against the listed requirements, using your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers. Applicants who meet the highly preferred criteria, including one year of CYS classroom experience shown on the resume, may be sent first. Incomplete applications, including skipped questionnaire items, may be rated ineligible, and overstated experience may hurt your chances.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Show your child or youth group experience and child development knowledge on your resume, and keep it to two pages.
  • Send proof of your education or DoD training with your application. Missing documents can make you ineligible.
  • Answer every questionnaire question. Submit online by 11:59 PM Eastern on 11/05/2026, or 12:00 PM Arizona time for a paper application.
