Who can apply: The public.

Open to the public, but only U.S. citizens may apply. Veterans' preference does not apply under this Direct Hire Authority.

Experience: You need one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 in the federal service. Specialized experience means evaluating and customizing software and systems, including analysis, design, development, testing, and maintenance, plus IT work in attention to detail, customer service, oral communication, and problem solving.

Education: Education cannot replace experience at this grade level. Degrees and coursework must come from a school accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

Closes in 8 days (November 11, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

The agency may close this announcement early or extend it, and may make selections at any point during the open period.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, questionnaire, and supporting documents are rated against the job requirements. Missing or incorrect information can lower your rating or make you ineligible, and the best-qualified applicants are sent to the hiring manager for possible interviews.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Describe your IT work in detail, including the full scope of your duties and results, within two pages.
  • Show at least one year of software or system development work comparable to GS-12.
  • If you rely on a degree, make sure it comes from an accredited school and send transcripts.
