Who can apply: The public, Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL).

Open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Displaced federal employees (CTAP or ICTAP) get selection priority if they meet the requirements.

Experience: For GS-5, you need 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-4 level, such as customer service, collecting and reviewing forms, or entering data in automated systems. For GS-6, you need 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level, such as onboarding contact work, benefits guidance, benefits enrollment, or HR ticket work. Your resume must show job title, duties, start and end months and years, and hours per week.

Education: For GS-5, 4 years of education above high school can qualify you instead of experience, or you can combine education and experience. There is no educational substitution at the GS-6 level. Only degrees from accredited schools recognized by the U.S. Department of Education count, and foreign education needs a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You are rated on your application materials, your questionnaire answers, and a USA Hire online assessment that measures general job skills such as customer service, attention to detail, and teamwork. You must meet the assessment cut score to be considered. Overstating your experience or cheating on the assessment can get you removed from consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to two pages or fewer, since longer resumes are ruled out.
  • Show job title, duties, month and year dates, and hours per week for each job on your resume.
  • Set aside at least 3 hours for the USA Hire assessment and complete it within the deadline in your notice.
