Who can apply: Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL), The public.
The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Federal employees eligible under career transition programs (CTAP, ICTAP, or RPL) get priority over other applicants.
Experience: For the ZP III level, you need 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-9 level (ZP II at NIST). This means coordinating building design and construction projects, gathering technical requirements, applying mechanical design principles, or using AutoCAD. For the ZP IV level, you need 1 year (52 weeks) at the GS-12 level (ZP III at NIST), such as managing lab construction projects or ensuring building code compliance.
Education: You can qualify with a bachelor's degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET, or with a related science degree such as architecture, physics, or engineering technology plus at least 1 year of professional engineering experience. Other options include an Engineer Intern or Engineer in Training registration, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, or at least 60 semester hours of science and engineering courses. A Ph.D. or 3 years of graduate study toward a Ph.D. can also count. Transcripts are required to validate education.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes tomorrow (November 4, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your application is checked against the basic qualification requirements, and subject matter experts may review the first two pages of your resume for technical qualifications. Overstating your experience may get you removed from consideration, and applicants are not rated and ranked under direct-hire authority, so veterans' preference does not apply.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to two pages in 11-point font or larger, saved as a PDF, since only the first two pages are reviewed.
- List the month and year and the hours per week for each job, or the experience may not get credit.
- Upload transcripts with your application, because the education requirement cannot be validated without them.
Kandidatu is an independent website: only the official posting counts. Read it before you apply.
