1 Check you can apply You are here

Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You need one year of specialized experience, which is typical of GS-6 work. This means screening, processing, tracking, or closing specialty care referrals, answering patients' referral questions, or giving accurate referral status updates. Paid work, unpaid work, and volunteer work all count.

Education: One full year of graduate-level education in a field such as Business Management or Health Administration can qualify you. You can also combine education and experience: divide your months of experience by 12, divide your graduate semester hours by 18, and add the two results. The total must reach at least 100%. Foreign education must be evaluated by a recognized organization or given full U.S. credit.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 3 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers are reviewed to check whether you meet the qualifications. If you appear to have inflated your experience, you may lose consideration. Errors or missing information may affect your eligibility or rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to two pages or less, or it will be removed from consideration.
  • For each job, list the start and end months and years and the hours worked per week.
  • If you use education to qualify, send transcripts and include only schools accredited by a recognized U.S. accrediting body.
  • Upload your documents early, because virus scans can take up to an hour.
