Who can apply: The public, Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL).

This job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Federal employees whose job was eliminated may get priority under CTAP, RPL, or ICTAP rules.

Experience: You need at least 52 weeks of qualifying experience at the GS-5 level, such as work as a food inspector, consumer safety inspector, public health inspector, or quality inspection specialist with meat, poultry, fish, eggs, or other food. GS-7 requires one year at the GS-5 level plus 52 weeks of independent, routine inspection work, and GS-8 and GS-9 add further experience requirements listed in the announcement.

Education: A four-year bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in agricultural, biological, or physical sciences, food technology, epidemiology, home economics, pharmacy, engineering, or nutrition can qualify you for GS-5. You can also combine education beyond the first 60 semester hours with experience. For GS-7, one full year of directly related graduate education qualifies, and for GS-9, two years of graduate education or a related master's degree qualifies.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 21 days (November 25, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated using category rating into Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified, based on your experience and education and these competencies: attention to detail, decision making, dependability, flexibility, interpersonal skills, resilience, and self-management. Your resume and online assessment questionnaire must clearly support each answer, and inflated or unclear information can lower your rating.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make your resume show the hours per week and exact dates for each job, since these details are required
  • Keep your resume to 2 pages or less, because longer resumes will be removed from consideration
  • If you use education to qualify, upload transcripts with your application and check that your school is accredited
