Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Preference groups such as military spouses, veterans, and transition hiring applicants are also considered, but you must claim the preference and prove it with documents by the closing date.

Experience: No previous experience is needed for the Entry Level. For the Intermediate Level, you need 6 months of experience comparable to CY-01 Entry Level in a group program for children or youth. For the Target Level, you need 12 months of experience in a childcare or youth program and knowledge of child and youth development theories. All levels require you to be at least 18, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and communicate clearly in English.

Education: Education can be used instead of experience for this job. For the Intermediate Level, 6 semester hours of college credit in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education can qualify. For the Target Level, 12 semester hours of coursework related to the age group served, or a Child Development Associate (CDA) or similar credential, can qualify. Education from a foreign school must be shown to be equivalent to a U.S. education.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Valid state driver's license, which must be obtained and maintained

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Upload your resume and any other documents before the closing date, since uploaded files may take hours to clear virus scanning.
  • Remember to re-select your resume and documents in the online application, or your package will be incomplete.
  • Include full contact information for professional and personal references on your resume.
