Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Preference categories listed include business-based action, military spouse, outside applicant veterans, spouses or parents of veterans, and transition hiring, and you must provide proof of any claimed eligibility by the closing date.

Experience: All levels require being at least 18, having a high school diploma or equivalent, and communicating well in English. Target level requires 12 months working in a childcare or youth program plus knowledge of child and youth development theory. Intermediate level requires 6 months of experience equal to the CY-01 Entry Level working in a group program for children or youth. Entry level requires no previous experience.

Education: Education can be used in place of experience at this position. For target level, you may qualify with a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, a Military School-Age Credential, another nationally recognized child or youth development credential, completed DoW-approved competency training, or at least 12 semester hours of college coursework directly related to the age group served. For intermediate level, you may qualify with completed Entry Level DoW training, equivalent industry childcare training, or at least 6 semester hours in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education. Foreign education must be shown to be equivalent to U.S. education.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 173 days (April 26, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

The posting may close before the closing date if all vacancies are filled, and applications are pulled for review every other Friday after the opening date.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire responses will be reviewed against the qualifications. If you are minimally qualified, your resume and documents will be compared to your questionnaire answers to judge your experience level, and you may lose consideration if your answers appear inflated.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Include the experience that matches your level in your resume, with clear details, since volunteer work also counts
  • Send supporting documents for intermediate or target level, such as training certificates, credentials, or transcripts
  • Gather proof of any veteran or military spouse preference before the closing date, since missing documents can make your application incomplete
