Child and Youth Program Assistant (Entry/ Intermediate/ Target Level)
Air Mobility Command · Department of the Air Force
This job in plain English
This is a Child and Youth Program Assistant job at the Child Development Center at Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington state, part of Air Mobility Command. It is a nonappropriated fund (NAF) job, which means it is federal employment paid from base activity money, not directly from Congress. The work schedule is intermittent with no guaranteed hours, and there are few vacancies across three levels: entry, intermediate, and target.
It may close early. The posting may close before the closing date if all vacancies are filled, and applications are pulled for review every other Friday after the opening date.
Can you apply?
Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen: this job is open to everyone.
- Open to everyoneAny U.S. citizen or national can apply. Some jobs also accept non-citizens; the announcement says so.
The job is open to the public. You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Preference categories listed include business-based action, military spouse, outside applicant veterans, spouses or parents of veterans, and transition hiring, and you must provide proof of any claimed eligibility by the closing date.
What you would do
- Supervise children and youth during indoor and outdoor activities, trips, and events
- Plan and lead age-appropriate activities and daily schedules
- Arrange and serve snacks and meals
- Brief staff, management, and parents on program activities
- Inventory equipment and supplies and list supplies needed
- Possibly transport children in government vehicles
Do you qualify for CY-1 to CY-2?
With experience: All levels require being at least 18, having a high school diploma or equivalent, and communicating well in English. Target level requires 12 months working in a childcare or youth program plus knowledge of child and youth development theory. Intermediate level requires 6 months of experience equal to the CY-01 Entry Level working in a group program for children or youth. Entry level requires no previous experience.
With education: Education can be used in place of experience at this position. For target level, you may qualify with a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, a Military School-Age Credential, another nationally recognized child or youth development credential, completed DoW-approved competency training, or at least 12 semester hours of college coursework directly related to the age group served. For intermediate level, you may qualify with completed Entry Level DoW training, equivalent industry childcare training, or at least 6 semester hours in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education. Foreign education must be shown to be equivalent to U.S. education.
How to apply well
What to send:
- Resume that clearly describes your relevant experience (required)
- Proof of any claimed preference or priority eligibility, such as a DD-214 for veterans
- Transcripts if you qualify through education
- Supporting documentation for intermediate and target level applications
How you will be rated: Your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire responses will be reviewed against the qualifications. If you are minimally qualified, your resume and documents will be compared to your questionnaire answers to judge your experience level, and you may lose consideration if your answers appear inflated.
Tips for this job:
- Include the experience that matches your level in your resume, with clear details, since volunteer work also counts
- Send supporting documents for intermediate or target level, such as training certificates, credentials, or transcripts
- Gather proof of any veteran or military spouse preference before the closing date, since missing documents can make your application incomplete
