Who can apply: The public.
The job is open to the public. The announcement says U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. may apply, and a condition of employment also allows non-citizens with 3 or more years of U.S. residency. Preference categories include military spouse, outside veterans, spouses, widows or parents of veterans, business-based action and transition hiring.
Experience: The entry level needs no previous experience. The intermediate level needs 6 months of experience equivalent to CY-01 Entry Level in a group program for children or youth. The target level needs 12 months of experience in a childcare or youth program, plus knowledge of child and youth development theories.
Education: Education can be used in place of experience. Target and intermediate applicants must also have one of these: for target, 12 semester hours of accredited college coursework related to the age group served, a Child Development Associate or other nationally recognized child or youth credential, or completed DoW-approved training; for intermediate, 6 semester hours in early childhood, elementary or secondary education, child and youth development, or special education, or equivalent industry childcare training. Foreign education must be shown to be equivalent to U.S. education.
Licenses and certifications:
- Valid state driver's license, if you transport children in a government vehicle
- Food Handlers certification, completed within a set time after hire
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 9 days (November 12, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: Your resume and supporting documents are compared with the job qualifications, then with your questionnaire answers. If your documents do not support your questionnaire answers, or you appear to have inflated your experience, you may lose consideration.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Make your resume show dates and hours per week for any childcare or youth work, since experience must match the level you apply for.
- If you apply for the intermediate or target level, send proof of the required coursework, credential or training with your application.
- Confirm you have a REAL ID or other approved identity documents, and submit proof of any preference you claim by the closing date.
