Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or owe allegiance to the U.S. You must also be a law school graduate with an active bar membership.

Experience: You need professional legal experience after law school: 2 years for GS-12, 3 years for GS-13, or 4.5 years for GS-14. Your resume must show that your experience meets the requirements for the grade you apply for.

Education: You must be a law school graduate with an LL.B. or J.D. degree. One year of experience can be substituted with a second professional law degree, or with top one-third class standing, academic honors, law review, moot court, a clinical legal aid program, summer law office clerk experience, or other clearly superior achievement. Transcripts are required if you use education to qualify. Schools must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Active membership in good standing of a state, territory, D.C., or Puerto Rico bar

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 10 days (November 13, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents, and online questionnaire are reviewed to check if you meet the qualifications. Applicants are not rated or ranked; all who qualify are sent to the selecting official, who may ask for a writing sample. Missing documents or not meeting all qualifications makes you ineligible, and false or misleading information can lead to removal.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Attach bar proof dated within 3 months of the closing date; a screen print must show the date it was taken.
  • Keep your resume to 2 pages and show the years of legal experience that match the grade you want.
  • Only the resume under Documents is reviewed, so upload the final version and check it before you apply.
