Do you qualify for GS-12 to GS-14?
With experience: You need 52 weeks of specialized experience at least equal to the next lower grade. For GS-12, this means researching legal issues under statutes or regulations, drafting legal documents, giving legal advice, and knowing administrative law. GS-13 and GS-14 require harder versions of these skills.
With education: All applicants need a J.D. or LL.B. degree and active bar membership in good standing. GS-12 requires two years as a practicing attorney, or one year as a practicing attorney plus an LL.M. GS-13 requires three years as a practicing attorney, and GS-14 requires four years.
Licenses and certifications you need:
- Active bar membership in good standing in a U.S. state, territory, D.C., or Puerto Rico
How to apply well
What to send:
- Resume of two pages or less showing job titles, employer names, dates, hours per week, duties, and federal series and grade
- Proof of current, active bar membership and good standing
- Law school transcripts, submitted with your application
- Diploma or other proof of degree; an SF-50 alone is not enough for education
- Recent SF-50 showing title, series, grade, and salary
- DD-214 if claiming veterans' preference, plus SF-15 for 10-point preference
- Proof of eligibility for any special hiring authority
How you will be rated: Your application is checked against your resume, questionnaire answers, and USA Hire assessments. Applicants who meet minimum qualifications have their resume reviewed by a Subject Matter Expert, and overstating experience or cheating on an assessment can get you removed.
Tips for this job:
- Show the hours per week and exact dates for each job on your resume, or that experience may not count
- Send law school transcripts with your application, since an SF-50 alone does not prove your degree
- Keep your resume to two pages, because only the first two pages will be reviewed
