Mission Support Specialist
Immigration and Customs Enforcement · Department of Homeland Security
This job in plain English
This is a full-time, permanent job as a Mission Support Specialist with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), part of the Department of Homeland Security. There are a few openings in Arlington, Virginia; Irving, Texas; and Washington, D.C. The agency is filling these jobs through direct hire, which skips some standard steps, and occasional travel may be expected.
It may close early. The first 150 applicants receive first consideration. Others may be considered only if management asks, and due to high volume, not all applicants will be considered.
Can you apply?
Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen: this job is open to everyone.
- Open to everyoneAny U.S. citizen or national can apply. Some jobs also accept non-citizens; the announcement says so.
- Displaced federal employeesFederal employees who lost or are losing their job through a reduction in force (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL).
Other groups listed above may get extra consideration, for example veterans' preference.
The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S.

Do you qualify for GS-11 to GS-12?
With experience: For GS-12, you need 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level or equivalent, such as writing briefings and reports for management, solving complex problems, and proposing policies. For GS-11, you need 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-9 level or equivalent, such as conducting studies and completing assignments that require interpreting guidelines.
With education: For GS-11, a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, 3 full years of progressively higher graduate study toward such a degree, or an LL.M. degree in a field that shows the needed knowledge, skills, and abilities. You can also combine education and experience. Education must come from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accreditor.
How to apply well
What to send:
- Two-page resume showing job title, duties, employer name, employer phone, employer address, dates (MM/YY), and hours per week
- Statement of whether we may contact your current supervisor
- College transcript (unofficial is fine) or list of courses with hours, if qualifying by education
- DD-214 or other discharge proof, if you are a veteran claiming preference
- SF-50 notices, if you are a current or former federal employee
- ICTAP notice, performance rating, and SF-50, if claiming ICTAP priority
- Political appointee SF-50 and statement, if you held a political appointment
How you will be rated: You will be rated on your resume, supporting documents, your answers on the occupational questionnaire, and a USA Hire online assessment. The assessment measures competencies such as attention to detail, customer service, decision making, and teamwork. Overstating your experience or cheating on the assessment may get you removed from consideration.
Tips for this job:
- Keep your resume to 2 pages, because only the first 2 pages are reviewed.
- Give the employer's phone number and address and the hours per week for every job listed, or your rating may suffer.
- Describe your work in your own words with specific details, and do not copy the announcement's duty text.
