Who can apply: The public, Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL).

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S.

Experience: For GS-12, you need 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-11 level or equivalent, such as writing briefings and reports for management, solving complex problems, and proposing policies. For GS-11, you need 1 year of specialized experience at the GS-9 level or equivalent, such as conducting studies and completing assignments that require interpreting guidelines.

Education: For GS-11, a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, 3 full years of progressively higher graduate study toward such a degree, or an LL.M. degree in a field that shows the needed knowledge, skills, and abilities. You can also combine education and experience. Education must come from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accreditor.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 3 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

The first 150 applicants receive first consideration. Others may be considered only if management asks, and due to high volume, not all applicants will be considered.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on your resume, supporting documents, your answers on the occupational questionnaire, and a USA Hire online assessment. The assessment measures competencies such as attention to detail, customer service, decision making, and teamwork. Overstating your experience or cheating on the assessment may get you removed from consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to 2 pages, because only the first 2 pages are reviewed.
  • Give the employer's phone number and address and the hours per week for every job listed, or your rating may suffer.
  • Describe your work in your own words with specific details, and do not copy the announcement's duty text.
