  • Open to everyoneAny U.S. citizen or national can apply. Some jobs also accept non-citizens; the announcement says so.

This job is open to all qualified U.S. citizens, nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited. Former EDRP participants cannot apply for the loan repayment incentive.

What you would do

  • Provide anesthesia care before, during, and after surgery and in emergencies.
  • Develop and carry out a plan of anesthesia care for each patient.
  • Prescribe preoperative, intra-operative, and postoperative orders and medications.
  • Teach and supervise students, residents, and other health care trainees.
  • Work with other health care staff to keep patients safe and improve care.

Do you qualify for VN?

With experience: The entry level (Advanced Practice Nurse II) requires no experience. The Level III requires one year of specialized nurse anesthetist experience at the Level II grade.

With education: You need a master's or doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia from a program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs (COA) when you completed it. Applicants who are still finishing their education may be referred and tentatively selected, but they cannot be hired until they meet the education requirements.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • Active, current, full and unrestricted license to practice as a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) or equivalent in a U.S. state, territory, or DC
  • Current certification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) or an equivalent COA-recognized certification

  • License and professional certification copies, if required
  • Cover letter, if required
  • DD-214 showing dates and character of service, if claiming veterans' preference
  • SF-15 with proof, if claiming 10-point veterans' preference

How you will be rated: You will be rated on how well you meet the listed qualifications. Your education, scope, and length of nursing practice also help set your grade and salary. Missing or incomplete required information may result in an ineligible rating or a lower overall rating.

Tips for this job:

  • The 2-page resume limit does not apply to this job, so send a long-form resume or CV that lists your dates and details.
  • Include your nurse anesthesia program's COA accreditation and your certification details so reviewers can verify them.
