  • Agency employees onlyOnly current employees of the hiring agency.

This job is open to the public and to current federal employees of the hiring agency. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.

What you would do

  • Watch for subtle changes in Veterans' conditions and report them to the RN or provider.
  • Give prescribed medications and treatments and record how each Veteran responds.
  • Help plan and adjust Veterans' care with the RN or provider.
  • Teach Veterans and families how to build healthy habits.
  • Communicate with Veterans, families, and caregivers who are hard to care for or communicate with.
  • Mentor other nursing staff on more complex technology.

Do you qualify for GS-7?

With experience: Preferred: 2-3 years of experience as an LPN or LVN. To reach the GS-07 level, you need at least one year of experience at the GS-06 level or equivalent, fully meeting the GS-06 LPN/LVN requirements.

With education: You can qualify by graduating from a practical or vocational nursing school approved by the state or accredited by NLNAC when you finished the program. Military health care training accepted by your state licensing body can also count. Another option is a license from a state that does not require school graduation, plus at least one year of successful practice as an LPN/LVN.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • Active, full, current, and unrestricted Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse license in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (preferred, not required)

How to apply well

What to send:

  • Resume
  • Transcript, if you use school to qualify (accredited schools only)
  • DD-214, if you claim veterans' preference
  • SF-15, if you claim 10-point veterans' preference
  • SF-50, if you are a current or former federal employee

How you will be rated: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications. Your application, resume, and documents will be verified, and errors or missing information can lower your rating or make you ineligible. Preference-eligible Veterans get preference when candidates are about equal.

Tips for this job:

  • List your LPN/LVN experience clearly, with exact dates and the level of work you did, because the VA will not assume anything.
  • Send transcripts if you use school to qualify, and make sure the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized body.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, attach your DD-214 and an SF-15 if required, since documentation is needed to award preference.
