Who can apply: The public, Internal to an agency.

This job is open to the public and to current federal employees of the hiring agency. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.

Experience: Preferred: 2-3 years of experience as an LPN or LVN. To reach the GS-07 level, you need at least one year of experience at the GS-06 level or equivalent, fully meeting the GS-06 LPN/LVN requirements.

Education: You can qualify by graduating from a practical or vocational nursing school approved by the state or accredited by NLNAC when you finished the program. Military health care training accepted by your state licensing body can also count. Another option is a license from a state that does not require school graduation, plus at least one year of successful practice as an LPN/LVN.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Active, full, current, and unrestricted Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse license in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (preferred, not required)

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

The announcement will close once 50 applications are received, which may happen before the closing date.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications. Your application, resume, and documents will be verified, and errors or missing information can lower your rating or make you ineligible. Preference-eligible Veterans get preference when candidates are about equal.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • List your LPN/LVN experience clearly, with exact dates and the level of work you did, because the VA will not assume anything.
  • Send transcripts if you use school to qualify, and make sure the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized body.
  • If you claim veterans' preference, attach your DD-214 and an SF-15 if required, since documentation is needed to award preference.
