With experience: Your grade depends on your education and nursing experience. For example, Nurse I, Level III needs 2 years of professional nursing experience, and Nurse II needs 2 years of professional nursing at the Nurse I, Level III level with a BSN. Preferred experience includes 5 years of Med/Surg RN work, or 2 years of ER or ICU RN work within the last 3 years, plus 1 year of adult outpatient primary care RN work within the past 3 years.

With education: You must graduate from a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE at the time you finished the program. A BSN or higher is preferred, and a master's or doctoral degree may raise your grade. Foreign nursing education needs a formal equivalency validation to count above associate degree level.

Licenses and certifications you need:

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.
  • Graduate Nurse Technician exception: a 120-day temporary appointment may be possible while you pursue licensure

How to apply well

What to send:

  • Long-form resume or CV showing dates and details of your nursing experience
  • Transcripts if you use education to qualify
  • Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with transcript for foreign education

  • DD-214 if you claim veterans' preference
  • SF-15 with proof if you claim 10-point veterans' preference

How you will be rated: Your application and documents will be checked for qualifications and eligibility, then rated on how well you meet them. Your nursing experience is judged on five areas: practice, veteran and patient-driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice or research. Errors, omissions, or missing documents can lower your rating or make you ineligible.

Tips for this job:

  • Submit your EDRP application within 4 months of appointment, and contact vhaedrpprogramsupport@va.gov with questions.
  • Describe your nursing experience clearly with dates, hours, and duties at each grade level, since the agency will not assume experience.
