Who can apply: The public.

The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the United States can apply. Non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited.

Experience: Your experience must match the grade you apply for. GS-4 requires 6 months of experience as an LPN or LVN, GS-5 requires one year at the GS-4 level, and GS-6 requires one year at the GS-5 level, including work with varied patient populations. One year of ambulatory care clinic experience is preferred.

Education: You can qualify by graduating from a state-approved or NLNAC-accredited practical or vocational nursing school. At GS-4, a program of at least 24 months, or graduation plus one year of patient care work in a supervised facility, can also qualify. Military health training may count if the state licensing body accepts it for full LPN/LVN licensure.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Full, active, current, and unrestricted license as a licensed practical or vocational nurse (LPN/LVN) in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

This job will close once 50 applications are received, which may happen before the closing date.

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your online questionnaire and documents. Your application, resume, and supporting documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may lower your rating or make you ineligible.

Apply on USAJOBS ↗
4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • The usual 2-page resume limit does not apply, so send a full long-form resume or CV.
  • Show dates, hours per week, and duties for each nursing job, since experience is verified.
  • Only apply if your nursing license is full, active, and unrestricted, because pending licenses delay hiring.
