Who can apply: Internal to an agency, The public.
The job is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S., and to the public. It is also open to current permanent employees of VA Connecticut Healthcare Systems, including recent and upcoming graduates of VHA Health Trainee Programs, who must send proof such as an SF-50.
Experience: The announcement does not set a fixed number of years for this job. Your grade level depends on your nursing education and experience, which are matched to the Nurse I, II, and III levels. Urgent care and critical care experience are highly preferred.
Education: You must graduate from a nursing school accredited by ACEN or CCNE. An associate degree or diploma can qualify you for the lowest level, while a bachelor's (BSN) or master's (MSN) degree can qualify you for higher levels. Foreign nursing degrees need a formal equivalency certificate to count.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registered nurse license from a U.S. state, territory, Puerto Rico, or D.C.
- Graduate Nurse Technician exception: a 120-day temporary appointment is possible while you pursue licensure, and it may be extended.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 3 days (November 6, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the qualifications, based on your online questionnaire and resume. Your RN experience is judged on five nursing areas: Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research. Unclear answers, missing information, or documents that do not support your answers may lower your rating or make you ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Make your resume show job titles, duties, month and year dates, and hours per week for each job, plus your education with graduation dates.
- Send a copy of your RN license and your transcript, since both are listed as required or possibly required documents.
- If you are a current federal employee, attach a non-award SF-50 from the current calendar year, because award SF-50s are not accepted.
