Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship. Veterans and military spouses are considered along with all other candidates.

Experience: You need one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in federal service. This includes installing, configuring and troubleshooting hardware and software, troubleshooting network or telecommunication services for emergency management communication, and entering data into an automated trouble ticket system. If you have held a federal GS job in the last 52 weeks, you must have 52 weeks of federal service at GS-09 or equivalent.

Education: A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher graduate education leading to one, in a related field such as electrical engineering, computer science, telecommunications management, or information systems management. You can also combine education and experience, as long as the calculation reaches 100%.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire responses are reviewed to see if you meet the listed qualifications. If the agency finds you have inflated your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Keep your resume to two pages or less and show hours per week for each job, or it may be removed
  • If you qualify through education, upload transcripts from accredited schools or you will be rated ineligible
  • Avoid acronyms and unclear terms on your resume, since the agency will not assume what you mean
