Who can apply: The public.
The job is open to the public, but only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. may apply. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must also complete Selective Service registration.
Experience: You need one year of specialized experience at least equal to GS-12 in the federal service. This experience must include assessing substance abuse and behavioral health disorders, providing substance abuse treatment, managing clinical cases for treatment plans, and giving expert consultation on addiction rehabilitation.
Education: You need a master's degree (or higher) in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current, active, valid, unrestricted clinical license to practice social work independently from a U.S. state, District of Columbia, commonwealth, territory or jurisdiction
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 5 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on how well your resume and online questionnaire show that you meet the qualifications. Your application can be marked incomplete or ineligible if required documents or information are missing, and you may lose consideration if your qualifications appear inflated.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Your resume must show hours per week for each job and must clearly support the specialized experience, or it may be marked incomplete.
- Upload your social work license and transcript with your application, or you will be rated ineligible.
- Keep your resume to two pages or less, because longer resumes are removed from consideration.
