Open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. Native Americans or Alaska Natives with a tribal affiliation may also apply, and the IHS must give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the federal definition of Indian.

Experience: You need at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-14 in community health work, such as planning and directing a health program, making diagnoses and prescribing treatment, or setting health care policies. For GS-15, you also need 5 years of graduate training in the job's specialty, or equivalent experience and training.

Education: A Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from a school in the U.S. or Canada accredited by a recognized body. A foreign medical degree also works if you have ECFMG permanent certification, a fifth pathway certificate, or passed the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. You must also have at least 1 year of supervised clinical training after your medical degree, such as an internship or the first year of residency.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Current, active, full and unrestricted physician license from a U.S. state, D.C., Puerto Rico or a U.S. territory
  • Board certification in the job's specialty, or verification that you are actively pursuing it through an ABMS member board
  • Medical staff clinical privileges at the facility, which you must obtain and keep

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 15 days (November 20, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: HR first checks minimum qualifications, then subject matter experts pass or fail your resume based on specialized experience and competencies. Your resume must clearly show the required experience to move forward, and any exaggeration or false statement may disqualify you.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Make your resume show your hours per week and clear duties for every job, since only the first two pages are reviewed.
  • Show at least 1 year of GS-14-level experience in community health program planning or patient diagnosis and treatment.
  • If you claim Indian preference, submit a signed and dated BIA-4432 form with any required tribal verification, or it will not be given.
