Who can apply: Federal employees - Competitive service, The public, Internal to an agency, Federal employees - Excepted service.
Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the U.S. can apply. The job is open to the public, and the announcement sorts applicants into areas of consideration, with current permanent VA Northeast Ohio employees considered first.
Experience: You need one year of experience at the GS-9 level, such as supervising coding staff, running a coding unit, or serving as an expert coding resource. Your experience must also show knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, medical coding, and how health records are structured.
Education: An associate's degree in health information technology or health information management, or a related degree with at least 12 semester hours in health information technology, can meet the basic requirement. Completing an AHIMA-approved or similar coding program of about one year or more, with anatomy, medical terminology and coding courses, can also qualify. You still must meet the GS-10 level specialized experience requirement.
Licenses and certifications:
- Mastery Level coding certification through AHIMA or AAPC
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 6 days (November 9, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
The job will close once 75 applications have been received, which may happen before the closing date.
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You will be rated on how well you meet the listed qualifications. Your application, resume and documents will be verified, and errors or missing information may lower your rating or make you ineligible.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Describe your coding and supervisory experience clearly and specifically, because the VA will not assume anything about it.
- The Mastery Level Coding Certification is required in your application package, so make sure you include it.
- The 2-page resume limit does not apply here, but the job may close early, so apply sooner rather than later.
