1 Check you can apply You are here
Who can apply: The public.
The announcement is open to the public, including U.S. citizens, nationals and people who owe allegiance to the U.S. However, the conditions section says you must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
Experience: You need one year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level. You must also show skills in interpersonal relations and conflict resolution, developing training plans, full supervisory duties such as assigning work and evaluating staff, and developing new test procedures.
Education: You must meet the education requirements for MLT certification. Only education from schools accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting body counts. Graduates of foreign MLT programs qualify if they hold a current certification.
Licenses and certifications:
- Current MLT certification from ASCP Board of Certification or ASCP Board of Registry, American Medical Technologists, or American Association of Bioanalysts.
- Non-certified applicants who meet other requirements may get a temporary appointment of up to two years as a graduate MLT, but certification is required above the full performance level.
Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.
2 Resume and documents
Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.
3 Apply on USAJOBS
Closes in 7 days (November 10, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).
You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.
How they rate you: You are rated on how well you meet the qualifications. The VA will verify your application and resume and will not assume facts about your experience, so be clear and specific. Missing required information may result in an ineligible rating or a lower overall rating.
4 After you apply
In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.
For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.
If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.
Tips for this job:
- Describe your experience in specific detail, including supervisory duties, because the VA will not make assumptions.
- If you use education to qualify, upload your transcript and list only accredited schools.
- Make sure your MLT certification is current now, because pending certification means you cannot be hired yet.
