Who can apply: The public.

Only U.S. citizens, nationals, or people who owe allegiance to the United States may apply. You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Experience: You need one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level. This means resolving engineering problems among architects, contractors, and design engineers; advising on engineering topics; authorizing architectural and engineering service contracts; and recommending how to use allocated resources. If you held a GS job in the last 52 weeks, you need 52 weeks of federal service at GS-12.

Education: You must meet the basic engineering requirement, which can be a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program or a degree with calculus and advanced science courses in five of seven listed engineering areas. Other options include a current Engineer Intern, Engineer in Training, or Professional Engineer registration, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, 60 semester hours of science and engineering courses, or a related science degree plus 1 year of professional engineering experience. Education cannot replace experience at this grade.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Valid state-issued and USAREUR driver's license that you can get insured

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 10 days (November 13, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: Your application package, including your resume, supporting documents, and questionnaire answers, will be reviewed to check if you meet the qualifications. If you inflate your qualifications or experience, you may lose consideration, and missing or incomplete information may make you ineligible.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Secret), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume must be two pages or less and must show hours per week for each job.
  • Describe your experience in the four specialized experience areas so the review can see it clearly.
  • If you use education to qualify, upload your transcript, because without it your education may not be counted.
