Who can apply: The public, Career transition (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL).

The job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, a national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Federal employees whose job was eliminated may get selection priority through CTAP or ICTAP if they qualify.

Experience: You need at least 1 year of specialized experience at the next lower grade: GS-10 for a GS-11 job, or GS-11 for a GS-12 job. The experience should include applying statistical methods and social science research, planning data collection and sampling, and analyzing data from more than one source. You must also show prior experience developing and applying advanced statistical models, OR managing and maintaining servers and complex databases.

Education: A degree with 15 semester hours in statistics (or 6 in statistics plus math), and 9 more semester hours in physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, engineering, or social sciences such as psychology, economics, or political science. Courses where at least half the content is statistical methods may count. For GS-11 only, three years of graduate study toward a Ph.D. can count. Education cannot replace experience at GS-12.

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

2 Resume and documents

Write a federal resume for this job. For each job you held, give the month and year you started and ended, your hours per week and what you did, using the words of the experience the announcement asks for. Many announcements accept resumes of up to 2 pages: check this one.

3 Apply on USAJOBS

Closes in 2 days (November 5, until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

You sign in to USAJOBS with a Login.gov account, answer the questionnaire and upload your documents, then you submit. Answer the questionnaire honestly: your resume must show what you claim.

How they rate you: You take USA Hire online assessments on 11 general competencies, such as teamwork, reasoning, and stress tolerance, and must meet a cut score. Your answers and resume place you in Best Qualified, Highly Qualified, or Qualified categories. Overstating your experience or cheating on an assessment can get you removed.

4 After you apply

In USAJOBS, under Applications, you can see where your application stands: received, reviewed, referred to the hiring manager or not, then selected or not. It can take a few weeks.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, a security clearance (Other), then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Clearly address the selective factor in your resume, using either advanced statistical models or managing servers and complex databases.
  • Show start and end dates as MM/YYYY and hours per week for every job, or that experience may not count.
  • If you use education to qualify, upload transcripts when you apply, and have official transcripts ready before your first day.
