Who can apply: The public.

This job is open to the public, but you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or someone who owes allegiance to the U.S. Noncitizens do not qualify.

Experience: For GS-12, you need at least 1 year of experience as a professional psychologist at the GS-11 level. For GS-13, the full level for this job, you need at least 2 years as a professional psychologist, with at least 1 year at the GS-12 level.

Education: The main path is a doctoral degree in psychology from a program accredited by APA, PCSAS, or CPA. You also need a professional psychology internship accredited by APA or CPA that fits the job, with some listed exceptions. Other options include a doctoral degree in another area of psychology plus an approved re-specialization program, or a doctoral degree awarded from 1951 to 1978 with a mostly psychological dissertation.

Licenses and certifications:

  • Full, current, unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or D.C.
  • GS-11 and GS-12: you may start without a license as a temporary graduate psychologist, but you must get licensed within 2 years of appointment
  • GS-13: you must already hold the license

Experience can be paid or unpaid, volunteer work included: if it matches the duties, it counts. The full rules are in the announcement.

For the interview, prepare three examples with the STAR method: the Situation, the Task, what you did (Action) and the Result.

If they choose you: a tentative offer, then a background check, then the final offer with your start date.

Tips for this job:

  • Your resume or CV should show dates and hours per week for each psychology job, and match the GS-12 or GS-13 experience levels.
  • Include a transcript, which is required even if you do not use education to qualify.
  • Apply by 11:59 PM ET on 11/06/2026, and complete the questionnaire as well as the documents.
